Please note that the below post has now been updated with a much more exciting post which you can view here –> https://buyingonlinebusinesses.com/buying-websites/flippa-is-changing-the-game-2/

The reason I wrote this post below is because many people were coming to me to buy websites from Flippa with no experience. Now Flippa has a new CEO and a fresh approach with a heavy focus on trust between sellers and buyers which I am excited about. So be sure to refer to this post instead.

For those who want to bypass Flippa and want to check out different Flippa alternatives, Motion Invest list multiple other places to buy sites also.

If you know anything at all about buying online business, I am sure you are familiar with buying websites on Flippa. The crazy thing is though, majority of the websites for sale on Flippa are terrible websites and there are so many reasons for this.

1. Professional Scammers

We all know that the world is filled with professional scammers and since the internet is the quickest and easiest way to make money, there are more and more scammers coming to the internet to prey on the miss-informed. This means if you are first starting out in buying online businesses for passive income and you turn to buying websites on Flippa chances are you could quite possibly be taken advantage of. These scammers are not just professional con artists, but also expert marketers. Which means, a lot of the websites listed for sale or auction on Flippa may appear to be generating decent cash flow, ranked well in SEO and actually performing significantly great. Although theses websites listed may well be the work of an experienced marketer who could sell ice to an Eskimo. So be careful!

2. Save your time

Now that you know when it comes to sifting through listing after listing when buying websites from Flippa you need to be incredibly cautious, but at the expense of your time. And if you have read much from my blog, heard me speak or even worked with me at some point. You would know I am always stating the quote “We can always earn more money, but we can’t earn more time’ and I do that to make a point. This is because time really is precious and I believe through all my years of experience, that fluffing around buying websites on Flippa is a huge waste of time when there are far more resourceful ways to find great online businesses for sale.

3. Protect your money

Money doesn’t grow on trees right, and if you are like most people in the world you want to protect your hard earned money. Which, is why I really wonder why people are spending their cash they worked so hard for, by buying websites on Flippa when it’s extremely tough to cipher through all the bad listings. I know personally, I protect my money and know that if I were to start turning to buying website on Flippa I would be far from protecting my hard earned cash.

4. Minimize risk

If you could sign up for Flippa and within one hour, create a sales page for a website you own that is doing really poorly but make it sound astonishing. How many other people do you think are out there doing that full time and making an income by selling overrated websites to people just starting out in the buying online business realm? Wouldn’t it be worth accepting that Flippa is filled with poor listings and find an alternative marketplace that is filled with businesses of solid track records? Where you are far more likely to have less risk when investing in those types of online businesses?

5. Copy Cats

Even though there are a lot of crappy websites for sale on Flippa, that doesn’t mean there are no great business ideas at all. For example and even though it is quite rare, there could be a website on flippa that is very appealing and in a great niche that hasn’t yet been over controlled with competition. And you think ok excellent, this is a killer niche, but the business needs a few tweaks and it would then be doing really well.

Did you ever think that for a second there could be people out their looking for great business ideas and stealing them from Flippa and building websites exactly like those? Of course there is! So imagine you were to purchase the rare business from Flippa that could do well with a few tweaks, and then 3 -6 months after purchase you have a few competitors already that are starting to dominate in your niche just by stealing those business ideas from browsing through Flippa an creating more websites just like the one you bought.

That would just be gut wrenching. To spend all your time looking past those professional scammers, to protect your money and then eventually finding a listing you could buy with minimal risk, all to be plagued with copy cat businesses in your new unique niche.

  1. Thanks for the great post. It looks like some sellers do not provide the actual figures most of the times.

I once saw some websites for sale on Flippa and decided to investigate further about the stats. On checking using various tools, I found out some websites quoted as making over $1000 did not have any traffic. In fact, using some free online tools, some of these had less than 10 visitors per day and was just wondering how they can make so much money.

It made me conclude that the sellers inflate some for the stats to just wow buyers and when you buy the site everything goes down.

    1. Hey Amos,

Yep that does happen. Flippa however is getting better and will but still we need to be great at doing our due diligence, well done 🙂
